Leap across to the wreck
The gap between the two engines isn't wide, but the endless fathoms of heaven gape beneath it.
|
Leading the way
You jump. Your stomach lurches with vertigo as the stars blaze above you and below. The air of the heavens is thin, and torn by unpredictable winds. Then your boots hit the running-board of the Ozymandias, and your leather-gloved hands fumble for a hold.
One of your companions throws you a line, and you lash the two engines together. Only then do the rest of the boarding party follow you. One of them forces open an exterior hatch, and you clamber inside.
|
||
Clear the obstruction away
You locate a length of pipe to use as a pry-bar and set to work.
Game note: This will test your 'Iron' skill. Iron is the skill of confronting and overcoming. |

A memory
As you strain against the stubborn steel, you remember an event from a year ago.
A boiler explosion had trapped an engineer beneath a tangle of plating and pipework. The captain was first on the scene; you were second. Together you pried the wreckage upwards enough for you to crawl beneath it, while the captain braced the bar across her back. "By all means, take your time," she grunted, as you dragged the engineer out. Back in the present, the twisted bulkhead yields, suddenly. A crewman cries out as its jagged edge bites him. You order him taken back to the Orphean while the rest of you press on: the way is clear.

A boiler explosion had trapped an engineer under a tangle of plating and pipework. The captain was first on the scene; you were second. Together you managed to pry the wreckage upwards enough for you to crawl beneath it, while the captain braced the bar across her back. "By all means, take your time," she grunted, as you dragged the engineer out. Back in the present, the twisted bulkhead yields. Your companions clear the exposed rubble away. The way is clear. | |||
Lead your party on a more precarious path
Go back out onto the Ozymandias' hull, climb past the blockage and enter through a window on the far side. And do so carefully.
Game note: Veils is the skill of deceiving and evading. |

A memory
The rest of the boarding party follow you without enthusiasm.
You recall the first time you climbed outside an engine, helping the captain fix a leak in an exterior pipe. The wind had shrieked, buffeting at you. You asked the captain what would happen if you slipped. "You fall," she answered, tersely. But where to, you asked. She looked down, then up, then back. The sky's depths spiraled all about you. "Away," she said, and you heard her fear. Back in the present, you tumble back into the Ozymandias through a shattered window. Your party spill in after you, teeth chattering, eyes wide with that familiar terror.

Conduct a thorough search
Your companions work quickly. The Ozymandias's hull has begun to creak. Your actions on board may have compromised its integrity.
|
Renewed
You find enough food and gear to restock your supplies, and enough spare parts to make necessary repairs to the Orphean. The food will need to be thoroughly thawed, of course, but you've eaten worse in the skies.
"Oh-ho!" cries one of your party, prying the lid off a long crate. It holds a cannon, still nestled in straw. Another crewman pulls a battered birdcage from a pile of ruined cargo. Within the cage, something winged and furred opens a sullen eye. You examine your finds...

Mount the 'Jerusalem' cannon on the Orphean
Her own weapons were damaged during your flight from the Blue Kingdom. That leaves you vulnerable.
Game note: You can claim both this and the bat. |
Fire and fury
The Cotterell & Hathersage 'Jerusalem' fires single shells to a good range more-or-less accurately. You order two of your party to get it back to your vessel and fit it immediately.
The Ozymandias groans again. The structure shudders, spasmodically.
|
||
Liberate a Diffident Bat and employ it as a scout
The heavens are wide, so locomotives use scouts – like bats – to locate things of interest: ports, resources, wrecks like this one to scavenge.
Game note: You can claim both this and the cannon. |
|
Eyes in the sky
The bat treats its rescue as an inconvenience, and immediately begins haggling over pay. You offer to put it back in its damn cage and leave it on the Ozymandias, at which point it becomes more polite. You doubt it will last.
|
|
Press on to the engine room
You might find more fuel there. But you had better hurry. The Ozymandias is beginning to tear apart.
Game note: You will abandon anything you have not yet claimed from the hold. |
|
||
Return to the Orphean
It is too dangerous to stay.
|
Away
You lead your boarding party back to your vessel. Unshackling her from the buckling Ozymandias, you stoke your engines and steam away, restocked, repaired and rearmed. The crew give a ragged cheer.

Pressing your Luck[ | ]
The wreck of the Ozymandias screeches as its metal buckles and tears. You press on through the shuddering corridors, searching frantically for the engine room.

Send a smaller party ahead to retrieve fuel
It's foolish for all of you to go. Send your quickest and lightest to retrieve the fuel while the rest of you return to the Orphean.

The short straws
No one is keen to go on alone. In the end, you have to rely on drawing lots. The two members of the party with the shortest straws pale, and make their cautious way towards the engine room.
The rest of you return to the Orphean and await their return. And wait. And wait. Too late. With a dying groan, the Ozymandias buckles and splits in half, the two ends spiralling in different directions into the sky. The two crew that were still aboard are lost. Solemnly, you stoke your engines and steam away, restocked and rearmed, but fewer.

A likely lad and lass
You select two sprightly members of your party, and they dart on into the Ozymandias. The rest of you return to the Orphean to wait.
You chose wisely. The two explorers return shortly thereafter carrying several sacks of glistening black coal. They are lauded as heroes by your crew as you stoke your engines and steam away, restocked, refuelled, repaired and rearmed.
| |||
Go yourself, and conduct a hasty search
Send the rest of the boarding party back to the Orphean. Go on alone.
Game note: Mirrors is the skill of investigating and deducing. |

Flight
The engine room is grey with spilled ash and littered with corpses. Little has survived the Ozymandias' ruin. You search, fruitlessly for coal, but linger too long. As the wreck is racked with final, violent tremors, you race back to the Orphean!
With a dying groan, the Ozymandias splits in two, sending shards of splintered plating spinning into the sky. Several of them bite into the Orphean, mauling its hull. Stoking your engines, you steam away from the collapsing wreck. You are restocked, at least, and rearmed.

In the nick of time
The wreck's engines are choked with old ash. You search swiftly, aware of every creak in the bulkhead, every tremble that runs through the dead locomotive. Finding several sacks of coal, you drag them to an exterior hatch and fling them across to the Orphean before leaping after them.
Unshackling your locomotive from the Ozymandias, you stoke your engines and steam away, restocked, refuelled, repaired and rearmed.
