  • [1] The clock sounds. Visitors scurry through the forecourt to their appointments.
  • [10] A mourner wanders past, clad in outdated black silk. She is recreating her husband's funeral today. She is smiling.
  • [20] The Amenable Host strides past, ignoring the crowd of admirers that follows him through the hallways.
  • [30] Quiet weeping can be heard echoing through the glass corridors.
  • [40] The scream of a boiling kettle. The attendants are on break.
  • [50] A cloud passes above the gleaming spires. Thunder resounds through the glass.
  • [60] A waltz can be heard from the upper floors. Someone has requested the recreation of the Sapphire Jubilee.
  • [70] A Tomb-Colonist is visiting a friend. Attendants draw lots to see who has to don the bandages this time.
  • [80] A crewman returns to your locomotive. Their eyes are red but they can't seem to stop smiling.
  • [90] A mother wanders past with a young boy. \"He would only ever listen to his old arithmetic tutor. His death has been rather expensive.\"
  • [100] A stream of hookah smoke blows by, trailing through the filtered glass chambers.

Variable Interaction description[ | ]

These desciptions appear when a specific group is called for text.

Ingoing[ | ]

  • [0] Skyfarers cluster outside the doors of the inner chambers, waiting impatiently for their appointments.
  • [1] A skyfarer clutches a basket of chocolates to him. \"I hope it's all right. They don't normally allow this sort of thing, but he is my own father.\" He coughs, mindful of the Amenable Host's pointed stare, \"In a fashion.\""
  • [11] Two aristocratic young ladies exchange gossip in the queue before the treatment chambers. \"And whom do you have him play?\" \"Father's butler, of course. Back on our estate in Bugsby's?\" \"Yes, I recall. For myself, mother's lawyer. Though I can always see the attendant's beauty mark under the make-up.\" \"Beauty mark? He doesn't have a beauty mark?\" There is a long silence.
  • [21] An attendant shakes her head as a merchant in a threadbare suit waves at her. She walks away, face set in a slight frown. The trader flushes, aware he has breached the social covenant of Magdalene's.
  • [31] An elderly grand dame is haranguing an attendant. \"Yes, but where is my husband? That gentleman was most assuredly not he!\" Hushed murmuring follows, interrupted by a loud cry, \"No, I did not misunderstand the rules. He's joined your staff!\"
  • [41] A trio of guests is going in together, all dark haired and straight-backed. \"Yes I know it's not the real thing, but I'd like a sense of closure,\" the tall woman says. \"What rot!,\" barks the short woman next to her, \"You want to argue over the will again. I have told you once I am not giving up the spoons based on a charlatan's say-so!\" \"Do be quiet, please\", the one man says. \"I for one am more than happy to hear again why I was lumbered with the third best wardrobe.\"

Outgoing[ | ]

  • [0] Some leave smiling, others weeping. No one can resist looking back behind them, even for just a peek."
  • [51] A set of attendants guide a frail old woman out from the chamber doors. Tears line her wrinkled face. \"So nice to see everybody again, for the first time since the Tomb-Colonies!\" She rummages in her bag and produces a set of figs. \"Take these for Gladys. I know I shouldn't, but last time I heard her belly rumbling something rotten. Almost spoiled the scene!\"
  • [61] A poet staggers through the doors, clutching a sack of wine. An attendant steadies him, while eyeing her colleague meaningfully. A mark is added to a name on a record book.
  • [71] A harassed captain waits by the steps for his crew to emerge one by one from the chambers below. Each he grabs by the ear and leads to a quiet antechamber. The shouting can be heard from here. \"If you had complaints about my captaining, you could have just told me directly! Not some ruddy actor!\"
  • [81] A priest wanders past, humming a decidedly secular song. He rubs his hands with glee. \"My god,\" he says to nobody in particular, \"this is much better than confession.\"
  • [91] Seven devils emerge from the chambers, their eyes all alight. They huddle in the atrium, apparently comparing notes.

Assisting[ | ]

  • [0] The backrooms are a bustle of activity; frenetic and frantic, everyone powdering their faces or adjusting costumes in time for the first shift of the day."
  • [1] The attendant sighs as you go over her lines together. \"I don't even know what a baronet is.\" She frowns. \"Some kind of root vegetable?\"
  • [11] The face powder the attendant is using is cloying. He flexes his shoulders, cracking each knuckle in his hands. \"The pay was worse in the Parlour but the work easier. I don't know how many more long-lost sons I've got in me.\"
  • [21] \"'And let me not be wrong about you.'\" The attendant frowns as she finishes her line reading. \"But she was. He never came back for her.\" She bunches her hand into a fist before shaking it out. \"And now I get to go and play the salve for his guilt.\"
  • [31] Two attendants ask you to juggle with them. \"I think our client was one of three. Gotta keep the movements precise; now move your wrist a bit. No! Ah, yes. Like that!\" They take deep breaths and face each other like a harlequin before a mirror. \"Ready?\"
  • [41] The attendant finishes applying the brush to her wig. \"I don't suppose you're familiar with Her Majesty personally? No?\" She quirks an eyebrow in her mirror. \"Ah well. I don't suppose tonight's client is either. How amusing.\"

Drinks[ | ]

  • [0] Glasses gleam in mellow candlelight. A party is being prepared. No customers allowed.
  • [51] An attendant dressed as Ellen Terry shares a brandy with you by the great fireplace. The flickering firelight gleams in the surrounding stained glass. She raises her glass in a toast. \"To all we could be.\"
  • [61] You share a bottle of Wilderness-chilled wine with a troupe of attendants, fresh from a circus performance. \"They expect us to keep up with Polmear and Plenty's!\" one tired amateur acrobat complains. \n\n\"Should we ask our Host for an instructor?\" an exhausted Strongwoman asks. \n\nA grey-faced magician shakes his head. \"This job. Do we need to have experienced everything to be anyone?\"
  • [71] Chequers and whiskey are the order of the day. A tournament is organised. Good whiskey for wins, bad for forfeits, extra shifts for losses, excepting yourself, of course. Your penalty is to do the washing up. The afternoon passes in a pleasant haze.
  • [81] A beautiful attendant provides you with as much sherry as you could ever ask for. It soon becomes apparent they are looking for as much information on skyfaring as they're able. You give as much as time and sherry allow.
  • [91] You watch attendants drift in and out of the room, bearing glasses, costumes, props, bottles, and postures. Some come to speak with you, others watch, noting your bearing, your habits, your mannerisms. No doubt some of you will remain here, repeated, in these stained glass chambers of the heart.
