Listen to the old woman's lecture
What could she be talking about?
Founder's Respect: Aspirant(founder_description) Game note: You will gain Terror and an Eleutherian Mystery. |
|
The Discordance
"There is an alphabet of fire and gold," says your lecturer, taking a sip from a glass. "A star-language that burns in the mind."
She dips her finger in the water, and traces something on the stage. "Some stars abandon the immutable light of their brethren for a more nuanced philosophy. The old language no longer suffices; heretical concepts exist for which it cannot provide signifiers." As the symbol takes shape, water turns to frost with a crackle. "These traitor-stars adopt another language. Or perhaps another dialect? The Discordance." She hisses and withdraws her finger from the completed symbol; the tip is blackened with frostbite.

Listen to the muscular man's lecture
You'd have to cross to the other side of the Forum to escape his voice. Might as well accept it.
Founder's Respect: Aspirant(founder_description) Game note: You are unsure what you will gain. |
|
The Liberation of Night
The huge man, though erudite, does not have much to say. He delivers nothing but smooth propaganda about the heroism of the Liberation of Night, the progress it makes in scouring an increasingly-empty sky, and the limitless tyrannies of its enemies.
Nevertheless, his audience grows and grows. His every sentence is greeted with a cheer. "Some Supplicants win an audience on merit," murmurs the Unassailable Founder, who has appeared at your side, arms crossed. "Some, unfortunately, out-compete their fellows by offering what they know we want to hear. I must admit, there are some flaws in my system."

Listen to the lecture on 'the Binary'
What could be causing such acrimony?
Founder's Respect: Aspirant(founder_description) Game note: You will gain a Savage Secret and an Eleutherian Mystery. |
|
The Binary
Beneath the cries of her detractors, you only manage to catch snatches of the Supplicant's lecture. Apparently when the Halved had a twin, it was collectively called 'the Binary'.
The Supplicant speaks of devils in the Binary's service, responsible for preparing a raiment of killing light for one of their masters before he went to war, and a mantle of merciful radiances when the other went to parley. "But they betrayed their master," she says. Amid a fresh chorus of shouting, she begins to talk about a doomed 'peace conference' – a peace with who, you couldn't catch. Before she can say much further, Recalcitrants storm the stage and drag her away. Some truths are too dangerous even for the denizens of the Berrenger.

Listen to the lecture on Mr Barleycorn
The lecturer sounds remarkably self-assured.
Founder's Respect: Aspirant(founder_description) Game note: You will gain a Sky-Story and an Eleutherian Mystery. |
|
Mr Barleycorn
"The Halved's most eminent, most enigmatic servant!" declares the Supplicant, striding down the stage. "We all know that it is in the Liberation's best interests to keep him on side, and he is at least more scrutable than his master. So what can we do? Send him baskets of fruit? A backgammon set?"
The Supplicant reaches the end of the stage, pirouettes. "No! Mr Barleycorn is fond of stories. He is a collector of information. And he is a lover of music. Bring him stories, secrets, and songs, and you may win his favour. Perhaps he might even relay your words to the Halved."

Listen to the lecture about the storyteller
He is exploring parts of Eleutheria's history that are usually only mentioned in whispers.
Founder's Respect: Aspirant(founder_description) Game note: You will gain two Eleutherian Mysteries. |
|
The Storyteller
"Stories are dangerous and they spread, but they are not quite like fire. They transform rather than destroy. When the Halved was halved, as it mourned the loss of its twin, someone told a story that changed its mind. And when its mind changed, so did everything, for everyone in Eleutheria.
"I don't know the nature of story or storyteller. But I can speculate. The storyteller was most likely an advisor, someone trusted, and I don't think they foresaw the Halved's reaction." "And the story, itself, well... I suspect it ended with a death." A forest of hands rises, but the Supplicant retreats.
