Story description[]

The descent is precarious. Flakes of ice trickle down the sides of the shaft, disturbed by your movement through the passage.

You climb down; chest pressed against the packed ice. Periodically you send up a flare to remind your waiting crew you're still alive.

And then, you can descend no further. You hang have reached the great, grey shell of the Silent Saint.

Trigger conditions[]

Breached ≥ 1
Location: The High Wilderness
Area: Limbo
Frequency: Always (100%)

Interactions[]

Actions Requirements Effects Notes
Recover Navaratine Gemstones
Through a rift in the Saint's shell, you can make out the iridescent glitter of gemstone.
    • Breached = 1

The diadem of a saint
You only have a hand-axe to widen the gap between the massive plates that form the Saint's exterior. Sweat trickles down your brow, freezing against your cheek. At last, you've made enough of a gap to extract several stones. They are as heavy and round as fresh eggs. Bereft of the gems, the mottled under-flesh of the Saint begins to weep milky pus. It's time to be away.
Recover Unseasoned Hours
Legend tells that the Saint gorged itself to death on a trove of hours.
    • Breached = 2

The belly of the beast
Breaking the ice was hard. Breaking open the shell is harder still. Your knuckles bruis; the shell is hard as diamond. Your gorge rises; the scent of carrion is thick as fog.

At last, the sub-dermal flesh of the Saint is exposed. It quivers faintly; flesh bulging outward, an ancient digestive process still at work. You take out your bolt-cutters.

The hours are located deep in one of its stomachs; half digested but intact. Your skysuit drips with bilious ichor. It's time to be away.
Look into the Saint's Eye
One is very close, the great lid closed as though sewn shut.
    • Breached = 3

The balancer's eye
The eye was once one of many. Empty sockets gape along the shell; each the size of a well. You press your face to the filmy surface, the pupil the colour of a peacock's tail.

Inside, you see an image. A choir of many voices; a flower meant to grow large and perfect, debasing itself with stolen nectar. A horde of Chorister bees approach, maddened and entranced. A flower that seeks to become a hive. Amalgamy. The seventh letter. The Saint begins its tearing work.

You see no more; the eye is dull. Time to be away.
Recover scales to mend your hull
The only thing that could have slain the Saint would swallow cities whole. These scales are durable.
A near miss
They are so hardy that you almost wrench your arm from your socket severing them from the Saint's dead flesh. You have to send up a flare to request assistance. Eventually, and with the aid of all hands you can get, you carry away seven scales, the colour of slate and the consistency of diamond. How they'll be attached to your hull is a problem for your engineers.
Abandon your delve
Return to the surface.

Game note: You will have to dig a new shaft to return.

Thawing
You haul yourself back up the long, cold climb to the surface, where your crew yet wait for their captain's return.
