Do what you can without aid
Alone, you can only deal with one symptom of the crisis.
Game note: You will only be able to prevent one thing from worsening. |
|
The devil's choice
Another pump has failed. A section of hull is beginning to buckle. And to top it off you are shaking with exhaustion. When was the last time you slept for more than an couple of hours?
You shake yourself. What will you concentrate on?
|
On bracing the hull
You must prevent further damage to your locomotive.
|
You drag steel spars to the weakest section of the hull and buttress it. Your exhaustion is now so profound you can't tell when you're dreaming and when you're awake. Meanwhile your engine – with its leaky pipes and frozen valves – continues to gobble fuel at an alarming rate.
|
|
On repairing the pipes and valves
If you don't, you'll waste an alarming amount of fuel.
|
For a day you patch cracks, replace lengths of broken pipe, oil valves and joints. Your engine's efficiency recovers.
But the buckling hull has now opened into a jagged rent. You are so weary that nightmares that usually wait until you are asleep cavort, brazenly, before your waking eyes.
| ||||
On resting
Unless you sleep soon you may not have the strength to resist the sky's countless terrors.
|
It is not easy to put the engine's problems from your mind, but you are so tired that within minutes of lying down, you are asleep.
When you wake, your engine has burned alarmingly through its fuel supplies. And the hull has developed several alarming perforations.
| ||||
Send the Rat Brigade to fix your pipework
They outfit themselves for an extended expedition into the bowels of your engine. When their work is done, it should prevent you from wasting too much fuel.
Game note: While they work, you will be able to prevent another situation from worsening. |
Sharing the load
You wave the Brigade off as they scurry away into narrow spaces you could never hope to reach. While they work, what will you turn your attention to?
|
Bracing the hull
You must prevent further damage to your locomotive.
|
You can hear the ringing of the Rat Brigade's tiny hammers as you drag steel spars to the weakest section of the hull and buttress it. Afterwards, you all reconvene in the galley. The rats look as exhausted as you.
|
||
Resting
Unless you sleep soon you may not have the strength to resist the sky's countless terrors.
|
Not even the sound of the Brigade's clanging wrenches and florid cursing can keep you from sleep.
When you wake, they are gathered in a snoring, ratty pile at the end of your bed. Your engine's efficiency is much improved, but the hull has developed a number of alarming perforations.

Send your Aunt out to fix the hull
She has donned a sky-suit and is eager to help. "It'll be easiest to do it from the outside," she proclaims matter-of-factly, and brandishes a spanner.
Game note: While she works, you will be able to prevent another situation from worsening. |
Sharing the load
Your aunt clambers out of an exterior hatch, spanner gripped between her iron teeth. While she works, what will you turn your attention to?
|
Sleeping
Unless you rest soon you may not have the strength to resist the sky's countless terrors.
|
Despite the dire situation, you are so weary that sleep comes quickly.
You are woken some time later by your Aunt knocking insistently at the exterior hatch; she has managed to shut herself out. The hull's condition is much improved, but your engine still wolfs fuel at an alarming rate.
|
Advanced alteration value probably needs examination.
| |
Repairing the pipes and valves
If you don't, you'll waste an alarming amount of fuel.
|
You spend the day replacing lengths of broken pipe, oiling valves, and tuning the engine. Its efficiency improves.
Your aunt returns from repairing the hull, shuddering with cold. Her hair is stiff with frost. You both slouch, wearily, towards the galley, too worn and hopeless to speak.
