- [0] The nearest land to the Xanthous Moon is the Moon's Sill. The path between it and the Empyrean main dock is well travelled by groups of small, privately-owned engines. Each convoy resembles a crowd of fireflies, drawn to the light of the Moon.\n\nThey travel here to perform rites of resolution and renewal, and to conduct the Mandate of the Moon.
- [1] The Empyreals crowd the hill's flanks. No one stands at the top. That privilege will be for the engineers: those brave souls who are to travel to the Xanthous Moon. \n\nThey will live on the gantries of the Moon for the next fortnight, performing essential repairs and maintenance. Doing so will earn them the enmity of the things that live in the dark. They cannot return till the time of the next rite.
- [34] The Engineers have landed. They stand outside the circle of Empyreals, their clothes in tatters, smeared with oil and dirt. But they are safe, and they are sound. All around you, lanterns are lit; a warm glow grows and brightens. \n\nThe crowd parts; the Engineers climb up through it to the centre.
- [67] The Eagle Khan's daughter arrives in a small, heavily armoured engine. Her guards ensure the crowd is at a respectful distance before she disembarks. Her robes are azure blue, and decorated with threads of gold. Her hat bristles with eagles' feathers.\n\nThe crowd parts before her. She leads the way to the edge of a small lake – the Moon's Mirror.
- [100] The ceremony is complete. It is time for the citizens of the Eagle's Empyrean to return to their daily lives. "

- [1] The Empyreals light lamps. One is pressed into your hand. Each group walks towards a gentle hill with the summit flattened off sharply, a boiled egg that has been de-topped before it is eaten. The Empyreals crowd the hill's flanks. No one stands at the top. \n\nIt is time for the Rite of Renewal.
- [34] The Empyreals light only enough lamps to pick their way to the site of the ceremony. Occasionally, there is a muffled curse as someone stumbles and falls. The Empyreals gather in a large crater, huddled together, waiting. \n\nIt is time for the Rite of Resolution.
- [67] The Empyreals are dressed in their best clothes. Children have been scrubbed and forced into finery, which, judging by the squirming, they are unaccustomed to. All wait with anxious eagerness for the Emperor's daughter. She is due to perform the Mandate of the Moon.
