Story description[ | ]

As morale suffers, mistakes occur. An error in the manifest, perhaps, or a spillage of fuel. Or worse, a dangerous sky-beast left inadequately secured...

A screech from the hold. The rending of iron. A Caged Catch has escaped!

Actions Requirements Effects Notes
Order the crew to recapture it
Be warned: it will not go quietly.
Failed event
Putting up a fight
You stress that the creature is not to be killed, and your crew grumble. The once-Caged Catch feels no such restraint, dealing injuries to them as they drive it, inch by inch, back into the cage. [qvd:Served by Shades(Catch)
Successful event
Back in the box
The thing deals livid, ragged wounds to your crew as they drive it back into its newly-repaired cage. Once there, it coils and sulks. You have it moved to the furthest, dankest corner of the hold.
Order it shot dead
Take no chances. And maybe you can at least salvage a meal from it.
Failed event Advanced alteration value probably needs examination.

Dearly bought
Despite a fusillade of fire, the once-caged catch reaches your firing line and mauls several crew before it finally falls. Your cook instructs someone to bring the least bullet-riddled parts to the galley.
Successful event
Waste not, want not
The first shot staggers it, the second wounds, the third is mortal. When its thrashing has ceased, your quartermaster advances on it with a butcher's cleaver.
Corner it yourself
You'll not risk your crew's lives.
Failed event Advanced alteration value probably needs examination.

Victorious
You and the once-caged catch clash in the hold, each of you giving as vigorously as you get. But its bulk is overwhelming. Trampling you, it blunders through the door, crashes through your engine to an exterior hatch and – barging it off the hinges – escapes into the sky. Behind it, it leaves a trail of smashed windows, bent pipes, and jets of hissing steam.
Successful event
Victorious
Your battle with the creature ends with it restrained and your sky-suit all but shredded. You order a new cage to be built. A stronger one, this time.
Partial success event (5%)
An unfortunate necessity
The creature fights back fiercely. So fiercely, in fact, that you are forced to kill it, or be killed yourself. The crew are not displeased by the outcome. Indeed, they seem to think you cut quite the dash, standing victorious over the thing's knotted remains.
Help it reproduce
There is good reason for the sky-beast's agitation: it is extruding a second, smaller sky-beast.
Failed event Advanced alteration value probably needs examination.

Nature is awful
The sky-beast careens through your locomotive, breaking pipes and fracturing supports until it finds a warm corner of the engine room in which to resolve its predicament. There it bellows until its offspring is born, whereupon the infant turns on and devours its parent: a process that the original sky-beast submits to placidly. While the sated infant dozes, lazily, your crew heave it into a new cage and return it to the hold.
Successful event
The miracle of life
The beast lows in tones of affronted surprise, too distracted to reject your assistance. Several hours later, slick to the elbows with lurid amniotic fluids, you have two caged catches where once you had one.
Lure it back into its cage with a trail of food
Its most reliable characteristic is its appetite.
Safe and sound
The sky-beast devours the supplies you lay down. It follows the trail of Murgatroyd Fungal Crackers and opened soup tins all the way back to its cage, and in. A poised stoker slams and locks the door.
